Asphalt
Hail bruises asphalt shingles. A hard enough hit fractures the mat under the surface, tears or punctures it, or knocks off the granules that shield the asphalt from the sun. A bruised shingle can look fine from the ground and still let water in later, which is why hail damage is easy to miss. After a big storm the real question is often not how to patch the roof, but what to replace it with.
Class 4
The impact test for roofing works like this: a steel ball is dropped on the sample, twice in the same spot, and the sample passes if it shows no crack or rupture on the top or the underside. Class 4, the highest class, uses a 51 mm (2 in) ball dropped from about 6.1 m (20 ft). The Interlock Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels we install are listed to UL 2218 Class 4 by Intertek under Delta Building Products. The test looks for cracking, not denting: very large hail can still dent metal. No roof is hail-proof.
After a storm
Stay off the roof. Photograph what you can see from the ground: dented vents, eavestroughs and siding, broken windows, granules collecting at the downspouts. Call your insurer or broker as soon as you can, keep the receipts for any emergency repair, and let the insurer's adjuster inspect and write up the damage before anything is torn off. Then get written quotes. You choose your contractor, not whoever knocks on your door first.
Insurance
Standard home insurance policies in Canada cover hail damage, and your insurer and its adjuster decide what a claim pays. We are a roofing contractor, not an adjuster, and we don't negotiate claims. We give you a written quote and the product and warranty documents you or your insurer ask for. If you choose an Interlock roof instead of a like-for-like replacement, ask your insurer how they handle the difference, and whether an impact-rated roof changes your premium.

Warranty
Read this before you buy. The manufacturer's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers the aluminum material and its finish, and it excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in), severe weather and Acts of God, and normal wear including minor dents. On any roof, ours included, hail damage is a matter for your home insurance.
Aluminum
There are no granules to knock loose and no mat to bruise. Each panel locks to its neighbours on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, and aluminum cannot rust, so a scuff does not turn into rust. The panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification. Made in Canada, and installed by our own Alberta company since 1999.

Hail comes first in Alberta, but it is not the only test: chinooks, snow and deep cold in winter, and wildfire where the forest meets the house. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each, and where it has limits.
Hail
Two Calgary hailstorms show what is at stake: the storm of June 13, 2020 caused nearly $1.2 billion in insured damage, and the storm of August 5, 2024 caused $3.25 billion, the second-costliest insured disaster in Canadian history. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. No roof is hail-proof, and the material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in).

Hail season
Alberta's hail suppression project flies from June 1 to September 15 every year, and hail here is most frequent in July and August, just east of the Rockies. The Calgary to Red Deer corridor is one of the most hail-prone parts of Canada, and storms reach Edmonton and the rest of the province too. If your roof came through last summer bruised, plan the replacement before the next season starts.

Chinooks
A chinook can lift a winter day from well below freezing to above it within hours, then the cold comes back. Each cycle loosens asphalt granules and curls shingles; cedar takes on water that freezes in the grain. Aluminum absorbs nothing and cannot rust. Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides with no exposed fastener, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.
Snow
Interlock panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre depending on profile, a fraction of concrete tile. That leaves the structure's capacity for what an Alberta winter puts on it: snow. Smooth aluminum lets snow slide, so we plan snow guards over entries, walkways and the driveway at the quote.
Ice dams
Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow that refreezes at the cold eaves. No roof covering stops that on its own, and ice damming is excluded from the material warranty. At the estimate we look at insulation and ventilation with you and tell you what we see.
Wildfire
FireSmart Alberta recommends Class A roofing and advises avoiding wood shakes and shingles. Under ASTM E108 (CAN/ULC-S107 in Canada) a fire classification belongs to an assembly, not a panel: on our roofs Class A is achieved with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood. Aluminum itself does not ignite, but no roof is fireproof. If your home backs onto forest, ask us to quote the Class A assembly.

No. Any roof can be damaged by hail that is big enough, and anyone who sells a hail-proof roof is overselling it. What you can buy is an impact-rated roof. The Interlock Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels we install are listed to UL 2218 Class 4, the highest impact class, by Intertek under Delta Building Products. Class 4 means a sample took two hits in the same spot from a 51 mm (2 in) steel ball without cracking or rupturing. It does not mean the panels cannot dent: very large hail can dent metal.
Class 4 is the highest class of UL 2218, the impact standard under which Intertek lists the Interlock Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels we install, under Delta Building Products. In the test, steel balls are dropped on the roofing from set heights, twice in the same spot, and the roofing passes a class if it shows no crack or rupture on the top or the underside.
