UL2218

Understanding UL 2218 in Roofing

UL 2218 is a widely recognized testing standard used to evaluate the impact resistance of roofing materials. Developed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the test involves dropping steel balls of varying sizes from different heights onto roofing materials to simulate the impact of hail. The materials are then inspected for damage, such as cracking or denting.

Impact Resistance Ratings:

  • Roofing materials are rated on a scale from Class 1 to Class 4, with Class 4 being the highest rating, indicating the material has the best impact resistance.
  • A Class 4 UL 2218 rating means the roofing material can withstand a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without cracking. This rating is the highest available and is often required by insurance companies to qualify for premium discounts in hail-prone areas.

How Interlock Metal Roofing Stood Up to Hail

I was amazed how the hail just bounced off the roof

★★★★★  - Airdrie, AB

Since the new roof has been installed we have noticed no damage and we have had three hail storms that damaged vehicles and siding on houses. I was amazed how the hail just bounced off the roof, and no piles of gravel at the bottom of our downspouts, and no shingles lifting off.

We read an ad in our local newspaper and it talked about the last roof we would ever put on our house guaranteed for 50 years. There was a phone number to call and we really needed to get a new roof as ours was 15 years old and there was no gravel left on the shingles. We called Interlock Roofing, we arranged a date to meet and discuss the application of his product. Within a few days Brad was here and we had a very pleasant and informative meeting with him. By the end of our meeting, we had decided this was the way we wanted to go. Brad said within about thirty days the material and installers would arrive and install the roof. The material arrived within about 15 days and about a month later our installer was on the roof.

Jamie a very nice and polite man arrived and introduced himself, he explained what and how he would do the work. We talked daily with Jamie and he would update us on how it was going. They didn’t have to strip the old roof they put the new roof right on top of the old one, saving waste going into the landfill and it didn’t matter if it rained during the installation. It took Jamie about a week, he got rained out one and a half days. When he left at the end of the install there was no sign of him working here other then a new roof.

Since the new roof has been installed we have noticed no damage and we have had three hail storms that damaged vehicles and siding on houses. I was amazed how the hail just bounced off the roof, and no piles of gravel at the bottom of our downspouts, and no shingles lifting off.

The house temperature is more consistent it doesn’t get really warm or really cool it stays where we set it and is more comfortable then before. If you are thinking of replacing your roof you should consider investing in your house and protecting it with an interlock roofing system. I feel good knowing I will never replace our roof again , the material stands up to anything the Alberta weather dishes out and there is peace of mind knowing what you see is what you get today , tomorrow and in the future. The warranty is transferable and the roofing system will ad value to our house if we every were to sell, which I don’t think we will do as we live on an acreage and have the million dollar Mountain View.

Brad has come back out to our home twice since the installation, just to make sure we are happy with the new roof. It’s nice to know that he cares even after the bill has been paid.

Thanks to Jamie and Brad we have nothing to worry about, that a nice feeling when it comes to our home.

Our roof has survived many hail storms without visible effect

★★★★★ - Calgary, AB

Our roof has survived many hail storms without visible effect while many of our neighbours have had to file claims with their insurance companies for hail damage to their roofs.

This letter of reference is intended for people considering to re-roof their home or garage.

We moved into our newly built home at the end of 1976 and by 1987 our asphalt shingled roof had deteriorated to the point that replacement was necessary.

We naturally looked for a roof that would last much longer than the old one and settled on aluminum interlocking tiles with a suitable surface finish and color. Aluminum does not rust at the cut edges and the finishing process lets the roof reflect a lot of incident heat in the summer. The tiles are folded at the edges so that the tiles interlock and the aluminum nails with rubber grommets provide a water seal and are invisible.

The surface profile gave the roof a natural pleasing look although the glossy surface has dulled over the last 30 years but still blends in well with the surroundings.

In 2006 we built a garage and wanted to match the roof to the house.

We contracted with Interlock Industries and Mr. Peter Stewart showed us samples of the roof tiles and colors. We believe the product is essentially the same durable material with maybe improved color retention and different cover layers for over top of the wood.

Peter has various roofers available to choose from. Our roofer showed us pictures of various challenging roofs he had completed and during construction I inspected his method and workmanship. I was pleased with his work and attention to detail, although roofing is a slow process if done right. Our simple garage roof was done in two days.

Metal roofs behave differently than asphalt roofs. During warm spells in winter accumulated snow may slide down. This lightens the weight on the roof trusses, so I don’t mind. During heavy rain and hail you can hear the hail hit the roof, however in today’s homes with the thicker thermal insulation in the attic this effect is much reduced. Our roof has survived many hail storms without visible effect while many of our neighbours have had to file claims with their insurance companies for hail damage to their roofs.

We believe in durable materials and construction for our home and these roofs have satisfied our needs. If you want to take a closer look you are most welcome to visit us at [REMOVED FOR PRIVACY]

Withstood large hail without damage

★★★★★ - Calgary, AB

We were concerned about hail but it withstood large hail without damage and the noise was no greater than the neighbour’s cedar shakes.

When friends of ours, who had just had an Interlock Roof installed, raved about their new roof, we were skeptical, but invited Brad to make a presentation before Christmas, 2005.

What he showed us about the roof and our unique requirements was right for us, so we gave him our order and work began in early 2006. No money up front and nothing until the job is completed to our full satisfaction was good enough for us.

The roof is huge, a very steep 10/12 pitch and with a number of ridges and valleys, skylights, chimneys and vents. We were concerned about winter installation, and especially the removal of the old pine shakes in potentially inclement weather. Our concerns were unwarranted as they removed sections of the old roof and installed the new, during the winter, and without leaving it unprotected. Our compliments to the installers, who were very competent, taking great pride in doing it right, having to scaffold and secure by ropes, in some very cold and uncomfortable conditions.

The results is a very beautiful black slate look, which certainly enhances the look and value of our home. We have experienced four seasons of weather; cold, snow, hail, rain, wind and sunshine and it performed extremely well. We were concerned about hail but it withstood large hail without damage and the noise was no greater than the neighbour’s cedar shakes.

We have no hesitation in recommending Interlock Roofing, Brad and their installers, and we are confident we have a roof that will outlive our needs.

    Sincerely,

    Jack and Nim Myton

Multiple hailstorms, we have had no issue or damage

★★★★★ - Calgary, AB

Wind and Hail were and continue to be a concern for us but thus far, with the high winds and multiple hailstorms, we have had no issue or damage.

We had our roof installed back in August of 2005. We weren’t ready at the time for a new roof, but we started to look into a products that would perk up our home and were environmentally friendly. Our daughter is an Environmental Scientist and it was important to us to select a product that reflected a “good for the environment” priority. The Interlock roof is made from aluminum and was able to be installed right over our existing roof, saving the need to dump it in the landfill. The other products available did not satisfy us and we ended up choosing Interlock, even with the higher price point.

The roof still looks like it did when it was first installed. There has been no change in colour, no fading and there have been no issues. Wind and Hail were and continue to be a concern for us but thus far, with the high winds and multiple hailstorms, we have had no issue or damage.

A few months ago we decided to install solar panels. There was a lot of discussion if the solar panels could be installed on a metal roof so we were very pleased to learn that it could be done. We’d encourage anyone looking to install solar panels and/ or wanting a roof that a permanent choice, to contact Interlock.

We are sure that had we gone with a lower cost product we would have had to replace it again. 15 years ago we made the decision to buy a roof that would never need to be replaced and we got one.

    Thanks Interlock

Aftermaths of a very heavy rain or hail is the sludge sediments

★★★★★ - Calgary, AB

One of the aftermaths of a very heavy rain or hail is the sludge sediments from an asphalt roof that accumulates in the gutter – this is a thing of the past now.

It was time to re-roof my house. Although I wasn’t sure if I was going to stay, sell or rent my home I decided a “life time” roof would benefit me in any case. My decision was sound. The roof is beautiful to look at and I get compliments from neighbors all the time. One of the aftermaths of a very heavy rain or hail is the sludge sediments from an asphalt roof that accumulates in the gutter – this is a thing of the past now. This is the first winter with the new roof and I’m anxious to see if there’ll be a cost savings in my heating bills and conversely a cooler house in the summer but I don’t see any reason to question Interlock’s claims regarding improved home efficiency. There was no sales pressure tactics or gimmicks just a courteous professional who visited my home at the prescribed time and quickly drew up an attractive contract. The installer also performed flawlessly and professionally and completed the installation in the prearranged time line.

I wholeheartedly recommend Interlock and their products. You’ll have a life time of pride of ownership as well as being the envy of the block.

  • Can I add solar panels to an Interlock Metal Roofing System?

All our products are solar compatible. Our solar brackets can be installed to house solar crystalline panels.

  • How much does an Interlock Metal Roofing System cost?

Our product is not an off-the-shelf roofing material. Plus the installation procedures vary from structure to structure. For instance, a home with a 3/12 pitch is easier for our installers to work on therefore labour costs will be less expensive. A home with no valleys, chimneys, skylights, or dormers will also be less expensive. Please contact Marcella for pricing info.

  • Are metal roofs loud?

Our customers keep telling us that their new Interlock Roof is no noisier than their previous asphalt shingle roof.

Yes! We’ve partnered with Financeit to offer you affordable monthly, bi-weekly and weekly payment options for your purchase. Visit our Financing page for more info.

  • Does a metal roof attract lightning?

No, a metal roof will not make lightning more likely to strike, but it may make a lightning strike less dangerous if it occurs. A conductive metal roof gives lightning a low-resistance path to the earth.

  • Are metal roofs hot?

All Interlock Metal Roofs are coated with the Alunar® Coating System. The "Cool Roof" ceramic pigment technology in the coating reflects and emits more of the sun's UV rays from entering the attic space. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are CRRC rated (Cool Roof Rating Council).

  • Do metal roofs protect against hail?

All Interlock® Roofs are made from heavy gauge aluminum which has been tested and has surpassed the industry standard measurement for impact resistance: UL 2218 — Standard for Impact Resistance of Prepared Roof Covering Materials.

While it is safe to walk on, in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions, the low-maintenance Interlock® Roof almost eliminates that need.
